The Pellicle Podcast Goes Live at Tap Social's Change is Brewing Festival

Pellicle is thrilled to be heading to Oxford on the Sunday the 28th of August to host a series of live podcast recordings and a beer tasting at Tap Social Movement’s Change is Brewing beer festival.

We’re big fans of Tap Social and the important work they do, and are thrilled to have been invited to take part in this festival. As well as being a brewery and pub company, they’re also a social enterprise that provides training and employment opportunities to ex-offenders, as well as creating welcoming, inclusive spaces for everyone who enjoys beer, and spending time in a good pub.

Our co-founder, Matthew Curtis, will be down in Oxford, hosting two panel discussions which will form the live podcasts, and a totally non-serious/very-serious beer tasting, where he’ll also be talking a little about his recent book Modern British Beer. If you’re lucky he might even have a few copies available for sale on the day. Each talk will last about 45 minutes to an hour, and will include time for the audience to ask questions of the panel at the end. Here’s the schedule:

2pm: Time For Change — Meet the Folks Behind Tap Social

Matthew will be joined by Tap Social’s managing director, Tess Taylor, in a conversation about how the business came into being, and why it decided to become a social enterprise as well as a brewery. We’ll be celebrating the wins so far, discussing the challenges the brewery has faced along the way, and finding out all about any exciting plans for the future.

4pm: Making a Difference — Why Are Breweries Working towards Greater Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity?

It’s just beer, right? So why are so many breweries, and other beer-adjacent folks, advocating for things like better workplace conditions, calling out toxic culture and sexual harassment, and working towards a more inclusive culture for both drinkers, and those who work in the industry? In this panel we’ll chat about the drive for social change within beer, why it’s necessary, and how beer—an inherently political beverage—is the perfect catalyst for this kind of activism.

On this panel Matthew will be joined by Catherine Webber of Attic Brew Co., James Casey of Pretty Decent Beer, and Alex Millhouse-Smith of North Brewing Co.

6pm: Modern British Beer — A Talk and Tasting with Matthew Curtis of Pellicle Magazine

We’ll round out our schedule of events with a fun talk and tasting led by our host. There will be a range of different beer styles to sample, and will provide the perfect way to  reflect on how beer in the UK has changed over the past 20 years or so. Matthew will also indulge the audience by discussing his definition of Modern British Beer, as well as reflecting on his own personal beer philosophy, “the broad spectrum of joy.” It’ll be an ideal way to unwind after some of the more serious discussions taking place earlier in the day.
